Tactical Tutelage 2023 ‘Modern Problems’

April 29, 2023 @ 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

Straight from FDIC Carl Haddon will be presenting ‘Mitigating New Vehicle Extrication and Electric Vehicle Fires’. Lt Mickey Farrell FDNY will be presenting “Lithium-ion Battery Fires, Understanding A Modern Fire In A Tactical Sense”. Mitigating New Vehicle Extrication and Electric Vehicle Fires.
New vehicle technology presents ever-changing challenges for rescuers. Students will gain an understanding of how vehicles have changed and will continue to change, along with the extrication and vehicle fire challenges these changes have created for responders. New metallurgy, design, construction, the 2017 glass standard, and safety system changes are addressed, as are the new fire challenges presented by hybrids, EVs, combustible metals, and lithium ion battery-fueled fires. Reevaluation of current methods, tactics, and equipment is a recurrent theme. Changes, advances, and limitations in current fire and rescue technology are also covered. This program is based on the first-hand, ongoing relationship between the instructor and automotive engineers at Volvo, Ford, Mercedes Benz, and lithium-ion vehicle battery manufacturers.

LITHIUM-ION BATTERY FIRES: UNDERSTANDING A MODERN FIRE IN A TACTICAL SENSE

A class developed from a collective group of Firefighters and Fire Officers who battle these fires on the daily Where we break down the ins and out of these fires in real-time as each day, we are collecting new and vital Intel. The topic of Lithium-ion battery fires is, unfortunately, being discussed and studied in a reactive form.

Understandably this job is constantly changing with the times; staying up to date not only with current trends but more so on how the trends affect our tactics will ultimately allow us to be
proactive, rather than reactive, the next time the fire meets us at the door.
